LOWELL -- Top-flight amateur boxers hailing from five of the six New England states will lay it all on the line Thursday night at the 73rd annual New England Golden Gloves Tournament or Champions.

The last of nine weekly shows for the 2019 Gloves at the historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium features male and female Open Division fighters battling for a spot on the Team New England for the National Tournament, to be held May 6-11 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the opening bell is set for 7:30. The event is sponsored by Lowell Sun Charities. Tickets will be available at the door.

The main event as far as local interest in Thursday’s finals is undoubtedly heavyweight Edmond Worley, a 30-year-old Lowell native who will defend his New England title.

Worley, representing Central New England (Lowell), is scheduled to fight in the sixth bout of the night against Demek “Joey” Edmonds of Worcester, representing Western New England. Edmonds is a veteran amateur heavyweight who will bring a strong pedrigree into the ring. It could be one of the best bouts of the evening.

Last year Worley, a 2007 graduate of Lowell Catholic High School, where he was a defensive lineman on the football team, took home the prestigious Rocky Marciano Trophy as N.E. heavyweight champ after getting into the division’s Final Four as an alternate.

Organizers have been very happy with the size of the crowds at this year’s tournament, up from last year due partly to better weather, plus the establishment of Thursday night as Fight Night in Lowell. They are hoping to go out with a big bang on Thurday.
