Vacationing Mother Who Left Child Home Alone Released
LONDON (AP) _ British police today released the mother of an 11-year-old girl reportedly left alone while the woman went on a vacation to Spain.
Yasmin Gibson, a 32-year-old actress, was freed on bail after spending the night in jail. She was arrested Tuesday night as her flight from Spain arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport.
The daughter, Gemma, is in the care of government social workers, and Detective Inspector Richard Searchfield said arrangements would be made for Ms. Gibson to visit the child.
Before Ms. Gibson was arrested Tuesday night she shouted to reporters that she ″didn’t do anything wrong.″ She said she had invited her daughter to accompany her on the vacation but was refused.
The case has been compared to that of a St. Charles, Ill., couple who left behind their two daughters, ages 9 and 4, to take a vacation in Mexico.
Gemma was found alone in her family’s west London apartment on Feb. 1, more than a week after her mother left for what was planned as a month vacation in Spain’s Costa del Sol.
It remained unclear how long the child had been left alone or whether the mother had made any plans for her to be looked after by neighbors.
An aspiring child actress enrolled at a London stage school, Gemma reportedly has told authorities that she does not wish to remain with her mother.
