Chicago-Area Gem Dealer Killed, $400,000 In Jewels Stolen

October 12, 1985

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) _ A gem dealer from suburban Chicago was shot and killed as he struggled with a thief who took the man’s briefcase laden with $400,000 in jewels, police say.

Romulus police Det. Sam Chalton said Friday that Subhash Jain, 40, of Des Plaines, Ill., died five hours after the attack Thursday night at a rental car agency near Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

″Witnesses said he had just pulled up in the parking lot and was getting luggage and a briefcase out of the trunk when a car that had been seen earlier parked on the street drove up behind him,″ Romulus police Sgt. David Early said Friday.

″The passenger got out, fought with Mr. Jain and grabbed the briefcase and luggage,″ Early said. ″The man got back into his car and Mr. Jain started pounding on the door. As the car was pulling away, the passenger shot Mr. Jain through an open window.″

Chalton said police and FBI agents were searching for two suspects.

Jain’s family said the briefcase contained $400,000 in jewels, Early said. Jain, who was self-employed, died of a single gunshot wound, Chalton said.
