12 Dead in N. India Train Accident

PATNA, India (AP) _ Nine passenger train cars hurtled off the tracks in northern India Tuesday, killing 12 people and injuring more than 50 others, an official said.

The accident occurred as the Howrah-Danapur Express was passing the Fatua railroad station, about 10 miles east of Patna, capital of Bihar state, said Rajwala Verma, a local rescue official.

Authorities said the rails had been tampered with. ``It is a clear case of sabotage,″ the United News of India quoted a railroad official as saying.

Patna is about 660 miles east of the capital New Delhi.
