FIRE ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) _ A dead man found stuffed in a large plastic tool box floating in the Atlantic Ocean was identified as a Mafia associate.

Louis ''Louie'' Dorval was identified through fingerprints after a fishing boat found the box 30 miles off Fire Island on Tuesday. He had been shot once in the head, FBI spokesman Richard DeFilippo said Thursday.

According to a federal indictment unsealed last week, Dorval helped New York's Lucchese crime family build networks to sell heroin, cocaine, stolen property, firearms and counterfeit money. The indictment charged nine men with racketeering.

Dorval, 30, of East Meadow, was on parole after serving time for assaulting a police officer.
