Sheffield mayor to meet with restaurateurs about smoking ban

December 23, 2018

SHEFFIELD, Ala. (AP) — The mayor of a north Alabama city is setting up a January meeting with restaurant owners who say an anti-smoking ordinance has hurt their business.

Sheffield Mayor Ian Sanford was on the losing end of the 4-2 vote for the ordinance, which took effect in October.

The Times Daily reports that business owner Laquita Logan told the city council Monday that members should have gone out to talk with business owners before voting on the measure. She said her business has recently fallen.

Sanford said recently that he’s getting in touch with restaurateurs about the meeting. He says he’d also like to hear from representatives of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post, which is also affected.

The ordinance forbids smoking in restaurants, private businesses, public buildings, and on city-owned property.
