January 17, 2019

HUNTINGTON — West Virginia State Police has released the name of a suspect who was shot and killed during a shootout that occurred with Hurricane, West Virginia, police officers late Sunday night.

Kevin Shawn Hanson, 42, of Huntington, died Monday after being shot multiple times. Hurricane Police Sgt. Phillip Armentrout was shot in an upper leg and Hanson was shot multiple times before dying.

The shootings were a result of a vehicle pursuit on U.S. 60 that ended near the intersection of U.S. 60 and W.Va. 34 in Hurricane when the suspect crashed a vehicle being pursued by Hurricane police.

Just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday, two groups of several gunshots were heard being fired rapidly, along with police sirens, throughout town. The pursuit ended when the driver wrecked his vehicle.

Armentrout was shot when he approached the vehicle, authorities said.

Officers with the Hurricane Police Department and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department returned fire, killing the driver of the vehicle, now identified as Hanson.

Hurricane Mayor Scott Edwards said Armentrout was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he was released just after 2 a.m. Monday.
