PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A man is on trial in a stabbing death in a posh section of Philadelphia after an argument that authorities said was over the suspect's New Jersey Devils cap.

Forty-year-old Steven Simminger is charged with first- and third-degree murder in the March 2016 death of 24-year-old Colin McGovern of Churchville.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that prosecutors introduced text messages two days before the stabbing in which they said the Blackwood, New Jersey man called stabbing "a rush" and "satisfying."

They said he was depressed and angry and was "a ticking time bomb" when he stabbed the victim, who was with some companions and looking for a hotel.

Defense attorney Gina Capuano said her client "was in fear for his life" and had injuries from an auto accident 20 years ago.
