NY man gets 27 years for stolen car crash that killed 5
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — A man who sparked a chain-reaction crash that killed five people as he drove a stolen car 154 mph (248 kph) on a Long Island road has been sentenced to 27 years in prison.
Jamel Turner refused for hours to leave his jail cell for Tuesday’s sentencing. Newsday reports the 25-year-old had filed a request to withdraw his March guilty plea to charges including aggravated vehicular homicide.
Judge Fernando Camacho denied the request.
During the sentencing, Turner apologized to the victims’ families.
Prosecutors say the Bellport resident was high on marijuana during the Valentine’s Day 2018 crash in Ridge. The wreck involved the stolen car, an oil truck and two other vehicles.
One car caught fire, killing four people inside. A passenger in the stolen car was ejected and killed.
