NEW YORK (AP) _ Stock prices began lower on Wall Street as the Dow Jones industrial average declined 61 points. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down ten points and the Standard & Poor's 500 Stock Index lost six points. Share prices were adding to yesterday's declines that wiped out Monday's modest advance.

Analysts said there was little in the way of a catalyst to move prices much higher, given the large gains for stocks over the past month. With the Labor Day holiday coming up on Monday, there's been relatively light participation so far this week.

In the way of corporate news, Nortel Networks is cutting more staff and lowering its financial forecast.

And Hewlett-Packard shares could come under scrutiny today after the company posted a mixed earnings report late yesterday.

Decliners outnumber advancers by about 3-1 on the New York Stock Exchange.
