Moen throws for seven TDs as L-Cats drub Pumas
LAKE MILLS — It was unrealistic to expect the same kind of passing proficiency from Lake Mills after Ben Dunkleberger threw 36 touchdown passes as a senior last year.
It was even more unrealistic when senior J.T. Toepfer went down in the opening series of the season. As it turns out, sophomore Adam Moen is a quick study and the L-Cat aerial assault still has plenty of juice.
After missing on his first attempt, he hit Hunter Buechel for an 81-yard scoring strike to start a string of 10 straight completions including two more TD passes. By the time he was done, Moen completed 30 of 47 throws for 387 yards and seven TDs as the host L-Cats torched Poynette, 47-14, in Friday’s Capitol North opener at Campus Field.
Even though the Pumas (4-1, 0-1 North) would score on their second play from scrimmage when Brayden O’Connor took a Jackson Elsing pass 80 yards, the L-Cats (4-1, 1-0) forced four turnovers and didn’t allow much else until after the running clock was activated.
Lake Mills responded to the Poynette score with a 12-play march that lasted 7:07 and was capped by Matt Johnson’s 14-yard TD slant from Moen. When the Pumas launched a punt snap back to their own 12 the next time they had the ball, Buechel caught an out route and traffic allowed him to get to the right pylon on the next play.
Poynette nearly lost a shotgun snap to start its next possession before the hosts used up nearly half the second quarter on their next drive. It finished when Moen eluded a pass rusher and found Johnson in the back of the end zone from 13 yards out.
When the Pumas bobbled a screen pass on their first drive of the second half, Charlie Cassady picked it off and set the L-Cats up at the Puma 28. Moen completed four of five passes on the short drive ending with an 8-yard TD grab by Luke Pierce.
Toepfer made a great break on the ball to pick off Elsing on the first play of the next Poynette possession. Two penalties stalled that Lake Mills drive but Kyle Kube’s crushing sack on Elsing led to a punt that set the hosts up at the Puma 47.
Moen got the Pumas to bite on a pump fake before lofting a ball over the middle to Buechel from 24 yards out. On the next L-Cat drive, Moen hit Johnson on a 3rd-and-19 fade for 47 yards before Buechel caught his fourth TD pass of the day with 7:50 left to activate running clock.
Lake Mills hosts Columbus next week.
