LAKEWOOD, Calif. (AP) _ Rep. Stephen Horn, a Republican who has represented southern Los Angeles County in Congress for the past eight years, announced Tuesday he will retire when his current term is up.

Horn, 70, was first elected in 1992 and is in his fifth term representing a district that includes Downey, Lakewood, Long Beach, San Pedro and Signal Hill.

Horn said that redistricting had created major changes in the 38th District and that he wanted to remove any doubt about his plans. The election is in 2002.

The congressman was previously president of California State University, Long Beach, for 18 years.
