roundup NFI advances in holiday tournament

December 28, 2018

It took four games for the New Fairfield-Immaculate boys hockey team to claim its first win under new coach Mike Bonelli, but the Mustangs haven’t stopped winning since.

NFI claimed consecutive wins at the Crusader Christmas Classic in Kingstown, Rhode Island, to advance to the final round. The Mustangs toppled Barrington (R.I.) 5-4 in a wild game Wednesday before beating Portsmouth (R.I.) 3-0 on Thursday.

NFI (3-1-2) will face fellow SCC-SWC squad Hamden in the championship round after the Green Dragons reached the final with wins over Rhode Island schools Prout and North Kingstown.

Joe Robinson, Alex Butera, Sam Mitchell and Aidan Henderson found the back of the net against Barrington. The Mustangs held a 4-1 lead before the Rhode Island club rallied to pull to within 5-4 with four minutes left.

Chris Graham posted the shutout in goal against Portsmouth to advance to the final.
