PHOENIX — A planned 6-mile spur into south Phoenix to expand the metro area’s light rail system is already approved with construction expected to begin in 2019. But critics are hoping to persuade the City Council to reverse course and derail the project, saying the new line along Central Avenue south of downtown will hurt local businesses by removing automobile traffic lanes and provide new avenues for crime. — ARIZONA WILDFIRES-THE LATEST: The National Weather Service has upgraded a fire weather watch issued for much of northern Arizona on Sunday to a red flag warning of critical wildfire conditions.

— BISBEE WILDFIRE: A wildfire burning in southeast Arizona had grown to about 12.5 square miles.

— TUCSON-SHOOTING-EX-BOYFRIEND ARRESTED: Tucson police say a 37-year-old man sought in the killing of another man and the wounding of the suspect’s ex-girlfriend has been arrested in Phoenix.
