Man shot while driving on I-490 in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 20-year-old man was shot in the hip while riding in a car on the Interstate 490.

The shooting happened about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday between the East 55th Street on-ramp and Steelyard Commons exit, according to police reports.

The man was treated at MetroHealth. No arrests have been made in the case.

The man and his brother were at the Hanini Gas Station on Woodland Avenue near East 55th Street. The man told police he bought a sandwich and Gatorade. Another witness told police the man and his brother were involved in an altercation at the gas station, police reports say.

The two men got into their car, drove south on Woodland and got on-ramp and drove for three or four minutes when someone fired several shots from another car. Several bullets ripped through the man’s SUV, according to police.

The man said he dropped his sandwich and was reaching to get it when he was shot in the hip, police reports said. Neither he nor his brother saw who fired the shots, police reports say.

The man’s brother drove to Steelyard Commons, where he stopped and called 911. Officers found the man in the passenger seat bleeding from the hip. Officers also noted a strong smell of burnt marijuana in the car.

The man’s brother was arrested in connection with an outstanding warrant from Beachwood police.

Police are investigating possibility the men’s red Nissan SUV was connected to several shots being fired earlier in the night in the 2500 block of Loop Drive in the city’s Tremont neighborhood.
