Police: Gunmen kill Guyana officer in his yard
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Gunmen have fatally shot a police officer in Guyana as he stood in the yard of his home in the South American country’s coastal capital.
Police say Constable Michael Cumberbatch was shot dead late Monday after arguing with two men outside of his house in the working-class Sophia district of Georgetown.
There have been no arrests in the slaying of the 28-year-old officer. But Deputy Police Chief Seelall Persaud says “we think we know who to look for in this case.”
The slaying comes amid a spike in violent crime and a day after Police Chief Leroy Brummell called for government authorities to resume capital punishment.
There have been about 90 killings so far this year in the country of nearly 800,000 people.
