Opera Coach Dead Of Liver Cancer At Age 66
BURBANK, Calif. (AP) _ Ernest St. John ″Jack″ Metz, an opera coach and vocal adviser to the Los Angeles Music Center Opera, has died of liver cancer. He was 66.
Metz died Tuesday at St. Joseph Medical Center.
During the last decade, from May to July each year, Metz also acted as vocal adviser to the Australian Opera in Sydney.
He spent most of the last 20 years as mentor and companion to Metropolitan Opera soprano Leona Mitchell. He also has worked with singers Leontyne Price, Kathryn Grayson, Maralin Niska, Mary Costa, Carol Neblett, Ken Remo, Jonathan Mack, Neil Shicoff, Carol Vaness and Angelique Burzynski.
Born in Charleston, S.C., Metz studied piano and voice as a child. He moved to Hollywood in the late 1940s and opened a studio. He has since coached hundreds of young singers.
A memorial service was scheduled Friday in North Hollywood.
