Russia wins 3rd straight Euro Team Championships
GATESHEAD, England (AP) — Russia won the European Team Championships for the third straight time after a late duel with overnight leader Germany on Sunday.
The competition went down to the final two concurrent events, with Maria Kuchina winning the high jump for Russia just after the country’s 4x400-meter men’s relay team finished second and ahead of fourth-place Germany.
The Russians earned 354.5 points, seven more than Germany. Britain was third with 338 after a day of rain, wind, thunder, lightning and finally sun in northeast England.
The European Team Championships meet is the successor to the European Cup, with one athlete from each of Europe’s 12 top-performing countries competing in each of the 20 men’s events and 20 women’s events.
Germany won the inaugural competition in 2009. Russia has won the three since then.
