Couple, Son Killed In House Fire
NEW YORK (AP) _ A fire ripped through a Bronx house early today, killing a suburban police officer, his wife and their infant son who was found in his father’s arms, authorities said.
Police spokesman Sgt. Ed Burns said Richard Knudsen, 26; his wife, Kim, 24; and their 6-month-old son, Richard Jr., were pronounced dead in their home.
The two-story, wood-frame house in the Riverdale section of the Bronx sits opposite a compound for diplomats from the Soviet Union. A police officer posted on duty at the compound heard screams and the sound of glass breaking from the house and called authorities shortly before 2 a.m., Burns said.
The cause of the blaze, which heavily damaged the house, was not immediately determined, officials said.
Knudsen had been in the police force of suburban Pelham Manor for about 18 months, police there said.
