Atheist holiday banner approved for display at town square
BETHEL, Conn. (AP) — A Connecticut town has approved an atheist holiday banner for display at the town square.
The Bethel board of selectmen says the banner will not be directly adjacent to an already-approved Nativity scene, but will be still in the town square.
The atheist banner reads: “To our Bethel community, Happy holiday season! (whatever you celebrate) From your friendly atheist neighbors.” The sign shows a background of snowflakes.
First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker tells The Hour that the town legally must allow the atheist display because it has already permitted the Nativity.
Knickerbocker says the town cannot edit the banner or move it to a less prominent location.
