LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) _ A Louisiana man who lived in three centuries and was among the oldest people in the world died at the age of 111.

Edward ``Pops'' Bernard was listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as one of the oldest living people. He was born on July 22, 1889, drove until he was 96 and raised cattle when he was well into his 100s, grandson Harold Bernard Jr. said.

Relatives who threw a birthday party in Lafayette for Bernard last month said he was ready to die. His son said he didn't have many ailments and wasn't suffering from arthritis or stiffness.

``I believe it was his choice to leave us,'' Harold Bernard Jr. said.

Bernard died Friday at his home. He had lived on his own until about six months ago.
