Trump: ‘Very hard for me’ to believe Kavanaugh accuser

September 19, 2018

President Trump said Wednesday that it was difficult to believe the sexual assault accusation against Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh was true.

“It’s very hard for me to imagine that anything happened,” Mr. Trump told reporters at the White House.

Mr. Trump said he relied on the Senate to resolve the accusation, which Judge Kavanaugh denied. But he said the accusation that surfaced at the tail end of the Supreme Court confirmation process was “hurting somebody’s life.”

“I think it’s a very unfair thing what’s going on,” Mr. Trump said. “And really it’s up to the Senate. I think they’re going to do a good job.”

Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court stalled after Christine Blasey Ford claimed that he sexually assaulted her at a high school party more than 30 years ago.

A special hearing on the claim was set for Monday but Ms. Blasey Ford’s lawyer said she won’t testify until the FBI investigates the sexual assault.

“If she shows up that would be wonderful. If she doesn’t show up that would be unfortunate,” Mr. Trump said.

The FBI said Tuesday that it does not investigate those types of cases.
