Smith Hempstone Wins Senate Panel Endorsement
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Smith Hempstone Jr., a veteran Washington journalist and columnist, was endorsed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday to be the new U.S. ambassador to Kenya.
The nomination must be confirmed by the full Senate before it takes effect.
Hempstone, 60, the author of a number of books on Africa, is a former editor-in-chief of The Washington Times.
He began his career in journalism in 1952 with The Associated Press.
Hempstone worked as a reporter and editor for The Washington Star from 1967 until 1975. The paper ceased publication in 1982.
He is currently a self-syndicated public affairs columnist.
