Antespeed Holds Off Cara Rafaela at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) _ Antespeed beat odds-on favorite Cara Rafaela by 2 1/2 lengths Sunday in the $156,900 Las Virgenes Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita Park.
Antespeed, ridden by Chris Antley and owned by Jack Kent Cooke, ran one mile in 1:36 2-5 on a firm track and paid $7.80, $2.80 and $2.40. Antespeed is a daughter of 1985 Kentucky Derby winner Spend a Buck and now has six victories in seven career starts.
Cara Rafaela, ridden by Gary Stevens, rallied to finish second and paid $2.40 and $2.20.
It was 2 1/2 lengths back to Hidden Lake, ridden by Chris McCarron, and a $2.80 show payoff.
``I didn’t expect to be on the lead today,″ Antley said. ``I thought for sure Raw Gold would be the lone leader and I’d be in the second flight, hopefully not being trapped.″
Stevens said of Cara Rafaela: ``My filly ran a game race. Antespeed _ she just keeps winning races.″
Sunday’s race was the 14th running of the one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies.
