Pakistan: Man killed by officer not linked to militants

January 24, 2018

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani authorities say a police officer has been charged with murder after an investigation found him responsible for “stage-managing” the death of a 27-year-old aspiring model in the port city of Karachi.

Sanaullah Abbasi, a senior police officer, tells The Associated Press that Naqeeb Ullah was not linked to militants as claimed by officer Rao Anwar after he killed Ullah in a Jan. 13 shootout.

Abbasi said Anwar has been relieved of his duties and authorities have barred him from leaving Pakistan.

Ullah’s family claims he was detained earlier this month but was later killed by Anwar in what investigators called a staged “fake shootout.”

Anwar is on a Taliban hit list and escaped an assassination attempt last year when a suicide bomber recently blew himself up near his vehicle.
