Man charged in crash deaths of couple who served town
SALAMANCA, N.Y. (AP) — A western New York town is in mourning after a retired couple who served as elected officials was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by a man now charged with vehicular manslaughter.
The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office says 27-year-old Kevin Donaldson Jr., of Cattaraugus, was charged in connection with the deaths of Mike and Donna Phillips.
Deputies say the couple was hit around 5:30 p.m. Friday as they crossed a street in the town of Salamanca, near the Pennsylvania border 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Buffalo.
Officials say the Phillipses were headed to town hall, where Mike served as town supervisor and Donna was the town clerk.
Donaldson was released from the county jail after posting $20,000 bail. His public defender, Mark Williams, said heavy snowfall at the time may have been a factor in the crash.
