Mustang golf enters state championship competition Monday

NEEDLES — Mustang golf finished third in the league championship May 6 and qualified for state competition in the NIAA 2A League to be held May 13 and 14 at the par 72 Toana Vista Golf Course in West Wendover, Nev.

The top three from the league tourney play in the state championship as teams. The Meadows finished in the top spot, recording 374 strokes in the qualifier May 6 at Canyon Gate. West Wendover scored 388 to finish second; Needles was one stroke back at 389. Lake Mead shot 410. Tonopah and White Pine did not qualify, though the top six golfers from non-qualifying teams may also play at the state championship.

Teran Woody shot 88 to lead Needles’ efforts, finishing fourth overall in the southern region championship. Trevyn Diaz finished eighth with 97, according to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association. Raymond Jenkins was 11th with 100. James Powell shot 104 to finish 13th; Michael Necochea 114 for 21st. James Hughes rounded out Needles’ efforts with a 139. The six are to represent Needles in the state championship. The top four scores will be counted.
