Four arrested for alleged New Year’s Day assault

January 4, 2019

Four people were arrested early New Year’s Day after a man was reportedly slammed up against a car and beaten with a shovel.

Deusten Byron White, 32, of Rochester, Timothy Earl Poindexter, 59, Maurice Antwan Hegwood, 29, of Rochester, and Saadie Rogelia Sanders, 50, may all face felony charges of second-degree assault as well as charges of third- and fifth-degree assault and disorderly conduct, according to Rochester Police Capt. Casey Moilanen.

A fifth person, Abdirizak Abdullahi Mohamoud, 28, of Rochester, may face a charge of obstructing the legal process for his alleged involvement in the incident.

Rochester police were called around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday for a report of a 30-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman who had been assaulted at a residence in the 700 block of Ninth Avenue Southeast, according to Moilanen.

When officers arrived, both the man and the woman were unconscious on the ground. Gold Cross Ambulance took the man to the hospital where he was treated for a broken nose and a cut above his eye that required stitches, Moilanen said.

Earlier in the night, the woman had dropped off her two children at the residence to be babysat, Moilanen said. When the man and the woman returned, the man went inside to get the children. Inside the house, the man reportedly saw a man and a woman arguing and decided to leave, Moilanen said.

Hegwood allegedly followed the man out, slammed him against a car several times and then struck him with a shovel, according to Moilanen. The three others facing assault charges reportedly joined in on the alleged assault.

When the woman learned that man was being assaulted, she reportedly got out of the car to stop it and was assaulted herself, Moilanen said.

Police said it was unclear what prompted the alleged assault.
