January 25, 2019

A Lumberton man was shot and killed Thursday night while to trying to hold up a local sweepstakes parlor, authorities said.

Robeson County deputies responded to a robbery and shooting at Lucky Clover Arcade, at 5306 N.C. Highway 72 West, at about 9:45 p.m.

James Locklear, 35, of Pembroke, a manager of the business, was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment and was stabilized, authorities said.

A second shooting victim, later identified as Gerald Lamar Cooper, 30, fled the scene before deputies arrived, but they were able to find him near a wooded area on Journey Road, authorities said. He was taken to Southeastern Medical Center, where he died of his wounds.

Investigators said Cooper fired a shot as he tried to get inside the sweepstakes parlor, and a security guard returned fire, wounding Cooper.

The shooting remains under investigation, and anyone with information about it is asked to call Lt. Terry Sampson of the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office at 910-671-3170.
