Crown of Crimson Wins Pocahontas

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) _ Crown of Crimson regained the lead in the final sixteenth of a mile after being passed at the top of the stretch and went on to a one-length victory over Maddie’s Promise in the $112,600 Pocahontas Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs on Sunday.

The win was the second in four starts for Crown of Crimson. Ridden by Robby Albarado, she covered the mile in 1:37 4-5 and paid $3.80, $3 and $2.60.

Maddie’s Promise briefly held the lead at the top of the stretch before giving way and paid $7.20 and $6. Dance For Dixie rallied from sixth after a half-mile to finish third and paid $4.60 to show.

A daughter of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, Crown of Crimson, owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm, earned $69,812 to increase her career total to $118,612.
