EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ The date of the final Kickoff Classic has been changed to Aug. 31 because of a scheduling conflict at Notre Dame.

The game between the Fighting Irish and Maryland was originally scheduled for Aug. 25 when announced about a year ago.

Notre Dame asked for a switch when it realized that the date coincided with freshman orientation.

The Kickoff Classic will mark the debut of Tyrone Willingham as Notre Dame's coach. The Irish were 5-6 under Bob Davie last season.

Maryland posted a 10-2 record and earned a berth in the Orange Bowl in Ralph Friedgen's first season as the coach at his alma mater.
