Orangemen wrestlers fall to Hastings
The Beatrice wrestling team fell to Hastings 42-29 Thursday night in the second consecutive home dual held on the stage of the Hevelone Center at Beatrice High School.
Beatrice coach Jordan Johnson said despite the loss, he felt his team wrestled hard.
“I thought we could get seven wins and we got six,” Johnson said. “That’s what I thought we would do against them and I’m just proud of how the guys came out and battled. It’s the same story, we just have some young kids who are learning how to fight and I thought we fought well.”
Hastings was spotted an early 6-0 lead when Beatrice had to forfeit the 285-pound division.
In the 106-pound division, Beatrice Bryce Karlin picked up a win by pinfall over Hastings’ Markus Miller, tying the team score at 6-6.
Tanner York then gave Beatrice a 9-6 lead with a 6-2 decision over Landon Zeckser of Hastings in the 113-pond divisin.
Drew Arnold added to that lead with a 15-0 technical fall win over Blake Hile in the 120-pound division, extending the Beatrice lead to 14-6.
In the 126-pound division, Beatrice’s Trevor Reinke won 5-4 over Hastings’ Dylan Miller, extending the Beatrice lead to 17-6.
“I’m really proud of how Trevor Reinke wrestled,” Johnson said. “Even thought that kid bumped up from 120, he’s still a really good wrestler, so that was a really good win for him. He really battled and pushed the pace.”
Hastings would then go on a run of three straight wins. In the 132-pound division, Izaak Hunsley defeated Beatrice’s Kobee Johnson by pinfall, in the 138-pound division, Austin Yohe defeated Beatrice’s Cole Maschmann 7-3.
In the 145-pound division, Mason Brumbauch defeated Beatrice’s Jarrett Koch 9-2, bringing the team score to 18-17 in favor of Hastings.
The Orangemen got the lead back with Coleton Williamson pinned Ricardo Gato-Gil in the 152-pound division. Jacob Karlin then pinned Jacob Kaiser in the 160-pound division, extending the Beatrice lead to 29-18.
Hastings finished off the dual with four straight wins by pinfall. Class B No. 1 ranked Damen Pape pinned Beatrice’s Torrance Keehn in the 170-pound division, Kyle Patten pinned Dakota Adams in the 182-pound division, Evan Morara pinned Zach Markey in the 195-pound division and Blake Davis pinned Jackson Zhang in the 220-pound division.
Those four pins gave Hastings the 42-29 win.
“Our smaller guys put in a lot of time in the off season and it shows,” Johnson said. “They are leaders and they just go to work every day. Our big guys are young and they’re still learning every day how to battle and you are seeing that in their matches.”
The Orangemen will be in action again on Saturday when they host the Beatrice Invite. Matches for that even will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Ozone.
