Cambodian Man Said to Exhume Kin’s Body

December 19, 2004

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) _ A Cambodian man exhumed his stepdaughter’s body and left it at the house where his former spouse had been living with another man, newspapers reported Saturday.

Ou Phuon, 59, and Klot Toeng, 43, had been together for about 10 years before Klot Toeng left the man a month ago, the Koh Santepheap, or Island of Peace, newspaper reported.

It said the body was that of 25-year-old Klot Rim _ Klot Toeng’s daughter from a previous marriage _ who died seven months ago. The grave was in Ou Phuon’s back yard.

Klot Toeng told the newspaper that she left her husband for a new partner because she could no longer bear his violent behavior.

He had told other villagers that the body ``should be reunited with her mother and not remain buried in my lot,″ the Rasmei Kampuchea, Light of Cambodia, newspaper quoted the villagers as saying.

Ou Phuon agreed to pay $250 in compensation after Klot Toeng lodged a complaint with police in Pursat, 100 miles northwest of the capital, Phnom Penh.
