Lady Vikes celebrate seniors, Homecoming in win over Crete
The Lakeview volleyball team improved its record to 13-8 with a victory over Crete Thursday at home, sweeping the Cardinals 25-20,25-16 and 25-21. The win was some good news for a Lady Vikes team that had lost five of six.
It was also a victory during Homecoming week and one in which the program celebrated its seven-member senior class.
“Today is a very different day for us, because it’s senior night and so there’s all of that going on,” said head coach K.C. Belitz. “We got to start all of the seven seniors that first set, and they played the whole first set and got the job done and that’s good to see. Always nice to get to see the classmates have that experience together, so I was really pleased with that.”
This victory gets the Vikings back in the win column after losing two straight and five our their last six since going 2-1 at a tournament in Aurora. Belitz said he hopes this is the start of some building momentum.
“You always like those wins on those special occasions,” he said. “There was a lot going on this week at Lakeview. There’s no question that it feels better than taking a loss, that’s for sure. I think tonight did nothing to hurt what i feel like is some momentum as we go into what is a huge week for us next week.”
Abby Kapels recorded a team-high 11 kills during the contest while Ashley Behlen put together one of her better performances since and early-season injury.
“That was the best she’s played since the Seward match when she got hurt,” Belitz said. “She got them in a variety of ways, hit some hard, tipped some.
“As you can see, the numbers are pretty solid across the board, which suggests we’re still focused on playing well. The score or the opponent shouldn’t matter too much in that. We should be focused on playing well. I thought all that tonight was just fine.
Kaycee Grotelueschen tallied six assists to lead the Vikings, and Mattie Purcell registered 17 digs to lead Lakeview.
The next game for Lakeview is 7 p.m. Tuesday on the road at Lutheran Northeast.
