Officer accused of abetting sheriff’s son reinstated

August 20, 2019

BAKER, La. (AP) — A Louisiana judge has reinstated a former officer who was fired after being accused of mishandling a crime involving a sheriff’s son.

News outlets report Judge Mike Caldwell reinstated Sgt. Adam Procell Monday to the Baker Police Department. Caldwell says Baker took more than 60 days to investigate Procell’s case, which is a procedural violation. Procell will also receive nearly $50,000 in back pay.

Procell was fired in 2017 and accused of giving Ben Gautreaux a pass on an ordinance forbidding firearm discharges. Gautreaux’s father is East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Sid Gautreaux. Procell was also accused of calling the ordinance “B.S.” He challenged the firing but it was upheld by the Civil Service Board.

Procell works for Denham Springs police but says he’ll briefly return to Baker to resign.
