Moon Rocks Stolen From Science Center
NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ A thief stole a set of six moon rocks from the Louisiana Science and Nature Center by ripping a small safe out of a wall and escaping unnoticed, officials said.
″This is a very serious loss,″ the center’s executive director, Bob Thomas, said after Saturday’s theft.
Thomas said he didn’t think the thief was after the rocks since no one knew they were kept in the safe, which also contained $25 in cash.
The tiny rocks, encased in a plastic disc about 8 inches in diameter, were on loan from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Thomas said.
Police and the FBI are investigating the theft.
Earlier this month, in Memphis, Tenn., a NASA van with a safe containing moon rocks was stolen and later found burned.
