SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) _ A wall collapsed on workers building a department store Friday, killing one man and injuring six others, authorities said.

A crew of 10 masons was working on scaffolding about 30 feet up when part of the top half of the cement block wall gave way, dropping the workers into mud, authorities said.

Rescuers had to dig the workers out from beneath bricks and broken scaffolding, said police Deputy Capt. James Radtke.

Three of the masons were able to move to a part of the scaffolding that didn't collapse, said Sheree Olson, a spokeswoman for Green Bay-based Shopko Stores Inc., which owned the store.

The dead man was identified was Joel Nack, 52, of Sheboygan.

Six others were hospitalized, including a man who suffered spinal cord injuries and was reported in critical condition. Conditions of four others ranged from serious to good, and a fifth man was reported in surgery.
