‘APPRENTICE’ CONTESTANT’S TRUMP CASE CAN PROCEED

NEW YORK (AP) —A New York appeals court has ruled that President Donald Trump isn’t immune from a defamation lawsuit filed by a former “Apprentice” contestant who accused him of unwanted kissing and groping. A Supreme Court Appellate Division panel issued its ruling Thursday in a case brought by Summer Zervos. She was among over a dozen women who emerged during Trump’s 2016 campaign with allegations of sexual misconduct years earlier. He called the women liars. A panel of judges on the Supreme Court Appellate Division said in their ruling, that the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution doesn’t require trials in state court to be delayed until the president is out of office.

JUSSIE SMOLLETT - PLEADS NOT GUILTY

CHICAGO (AP) —“Empire” actor Jussie Smollett has pleaded not guilty to the charges accusing him of lying to police about being attacked in downtown Chicago a few weeks ago. The 36-year-old actor’s lawyer entered the plea on Smollett’s behalf. Judge Steven Watkins is assigned to oversee the case, including the trial. Smollett is charged with 16 counts of disorderly conduct. Smollett is accused of lying to police about being the victim of a racist and homophobic attack by two men on Jan. 29 in downtown Chicago. Both prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed to allow cameras during today’s session. The next court date is scheduled for April 17.

JUSSIE SMOLLETT - BROTHERS SAY THEY’RE SORRY

CHICAGO (AP) — The two men police say Jussie Smollett paid to stage a fake hate crime on the actor say they regret what they did. Their attorney says the brothers agreed to the scheme because they saw Smollett as a friend — and they thought he was helping them with their fledgling careers in acting and bodybuilding. Authorities say Abel and Ola Osundario were paid $3,500 by Smollett to rough him up in downtown Chicago back in January. Once authorities looked into the case, it became apparent the story the actor told didn’t pan out. The attorney for the brothers says they now realize how much the scam has affected minorities and people who are victims of actual hate crimes.

R. KELLY - TALE OF THE TAPES?

CHICAGO (AP) — Did R. Kelly go around carrying a stash of videotapes featuring his sexual conquests on underage girls? Yes, says an acquaintance of the R&B star now charged with sexual abuse. The person testified at Kelly’s 2008 trial that R. Kelly would lug around a duffel bag filled with his home-brewed sex tapes. And he’d have it with him when he went to recording studios, film sets and gyms. It’s unclear where these tapes are now. But it appears prosecutors in Chicago have gotten their hands on at least two of them. Recently, a Pennsylvania man said he discovered one while cleaning his home. Meanwhile, a 45-minute video of Kelly having sex with a girl who says on camera that she’s 14 helped move prosecutors in Chicago to bring a new case against the singer.

“CAPTAIN MARVEL” TAKES DOWN TROLLS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Captain Marvel” 1, Trolls 0.

No, they don’t keep score on things like that. But it’s pretty clear that when “Captain Marvel” took the top spot on the box office list, it had scored a big win not only over the other movies — but over the trolls that haunt the internet. Some self-described critics flooded social media and sites like Rotten Tomatoes to rip the movie - except few people of those who made the negative comments hadn’t even seen it. The trolls also put false stories out there about “Captain Marvel” star Brie Larson. Despite the negativity, the movie scored well enough with audiences to take the top spot in the box office race this past weekend.

2ND ACTRESS SURRENDERS IN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS SCHEME

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman have made their initial appearances in court. Now they and the others implicated in a nationwide college admissions scheme will have to wait to learn what comes next. The celebrities are among about 50 upper-crust folk facing charges that they offered bribes and pulled other strings to get their kids into colleges they didn’t qualify for. In one case, a parent spent as much as $6.5 million to buy their kid’s way into a prestigious school. That has gotten the attention of U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. She says the department is “looking closely” at the issue.

TUCKER CARLSON COMMENTS

NEW YORK (AP) — Tucker Carlson said what he said. Now the question of whether he gets to keep his job on Fox News Channel comes down to what his bosses have to say about his comments about race and gender. And that decision is likely to be based on what advertisers on the show have to say. That’s all good for the liberal advocacy group Media Matters, which recently released tapes of Carlson’s comments on a radio talk show years ago. The timing’s no accident. Fox held a sales meeting with advertisers yesterday — and the group says it wants to pressure the network to act better by making advertisers aware of what goes out on Fox’s air.

DEPORTATION LOOMS FOR ‘REAL HOUSEWIVES HUSBAND’

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The husband of one of the “Real Housewives of New Jersey” reality TV stars has been released from federal prison and is waiting to see if he’ll be deported back to Italy. An attorney for Joe Giudice (JOO’-dys) says he’s been sent to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in central Pennsylvania. Giudice and wife Teresa pleaded guilty in 2014 to financial fraud. Joe Giudice has said he came to the U.S. as an infant and wasn’t aware he wasn’t an American citizen. Teresa Giudice served nearly a year in prison and was freed in December 2015. Under a sentencing agreement that allowed the couple to care for their four young children, Joe Giudice began serving his 41-month sentence after his wife was released.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG CHEERED, RETURNS TO ‘THE VIEW’

NEW YORK (AP) — Whoopi Goldberg received a standing ovation from the audience and hugs from her castmates as she returned to “The View.” Goldberg surprised everyone as she appeared on the ABC program Thursday, less than a week after she said in a video that she nearly died of pneumonia. The audience chanted “Whoopi!” Goldberg said “I’m not there yet, but the only way it’s going to get better is if I begin, so this is my beginning.” She is planning a gradual return.

SUPER BOWL SWAP

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s too early to set your DVR’s or anything. But there some changes in which network will carry upcoming Super Bowls. The NFL says the telecasts by NBC and CBS will swap years in 2021 and 2022. That means both nets can plug other major sports events with coverage of the Super Bowl, which is usually the year’s highest-rated show. The upshot: CBS will do the 2021 game, giving it the Super Bowl and the NCAA Final Four in a two-month span. The next year, NBC gets Super Bowl in the same year it will have the Winter Olympics. Fox has the next Super Bowl.
