Deputies Lose 780 Pounds on Orders of Sheriff - Who Doesn’t
GRETNA, La. (AP) _ Twenty-three deputies lost 780 pounds on orders of Sheriff Harry Lee, who acknowledged there’s no dearth to his girth.
Lee, who weighed 325 pounds when he put himself and 30 of his heaviest crimefighters on a diet in August, lost 14 pounds in the first month. But he stopped dieting while campaigning for re-election and returned to his original weight.
Seven Jefferson Parish deputies dropped out of the program, which involved exercise, a low-fat diet and seminars on sensible cooking and eating. The 23 deputies who did manage to lose weight - about 34 pounds each, on average - were honored with certificates and trophies Thursday.
The sheriff intends to try the program again, saying, ″I’m satisfied that I’ll stay with it.″
Detective Emmett Higginbotham, who shed the most weight - 63 pounds - said: ″I always wanted to get on a diet and never had the incentive. When the sheriff said to get on it, I had incentive.″
