BASTIA, Corsica (AP) _ Two members of a French hiking team froze to death in a blizzard after being caught overnight on a peak in central Corsica, officials said Monday.

The snowstorm struck the Monte d'Oro peak late Sunday, forcing the group of 11 hikers to split into two groups. One group managed to reach a mountain refuge, where they called for help using a cellular phone.

Some 40 rescue workers in helicopters scoured the peak before successfully locating both groups early Monday.

Of the second group, one person was hospitalized for acute hypothermia.

More than 70 people have died in avalanches and snowstorms in Europe this winter.
