LOCAL COLLEGE: Deverna, Scranton Topple Colonels
Kyle DeVerna scored a career-high 23 points to lead the University of Scranton to a 74-64 win over Wilkes University on the first day of the Cross County Challenge men’s basketball tournament Saturday at King’s College.
The Royals (10-0) pulled ahead with a 15-2 run midway through the first half and Wilkes got no closer than six points in the second half.
Abington Heights graduate Jackson Danzig had 11 points and six rebounds for Scranton. Tommy Bowen had 17 points and nine rebounds for Wilkes (8-2) and Marcus Robinson had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Marywood 72, King’s 63
At Wilkes-Barre, Thomas Swartz led four players in double figures with 18 points to lead Marywood University in the Cross County Challenge.
King’s trailed by five at halftime but took a one-point lead with six minutes left in the game. Zach Tinkham then hit a 3-pointer to give the Pacers the lead again and Marywood led the rest of the way.
Tinkham finished with
16 points for the Pacers (8-4). Jake Pawliczak had 19 points and 12 rebounds for King’s (2-9) and Andrew Hudak had 15 points.
SUNY-Cortland 107, Keystone 79
At Pittsford, New York, Nicky Bonura scored 20 points to lead SUNY-Cortland in the first round of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament at St. John Fisher College.
Cortland shot 52 percent from the field in the first half while hitting eight 3-pointers to build a 21-point halftime lead.
Ray Mills scored 22 points for Keystone (0-11) and Derrick Donigan had 18 points and 14 rebounds.
