May 21, 2019

Past and present veterans will be recognized by the Beaver Dam community Monday. A committee of local veterans groups has organized a Memorial Day ceremony honoring those who preserve our country’s freedom.

The memorial service will be held at Veterans Memorial Park starting at 10:15 a.m. in Oakwood Cemetery east of Highway 151 on Highway 33. The Marine Corp League of Beaver Dam is hosting this year’s ceremony. The service will include the reading of the names of veterans who have died in the past year. During the memorial service at the cemetery, there will be some park benches available for seating, but people should bring lawn chairs and blankets for additional seating.

Beaver Dam High School marching band and St. Katharine Drexel marching band will provide patriotic music.

The guest speaker for this year’s memorial service is U.S. Navy veteran Amber Nikolai.

Nikolai served in the Navy as a Master at Arms (Security Police, E-5) from February 2002 to January 2005. Her exemplary service was recognized with the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and a Letter of Commendation from a Navy Rear Admiral.

Nikolai currently serves as the American Legion, Department Adjutant, Chief Operating/Financial Officer who is responsible for the overall efficient, effective, and financially sound management of all aspects of the organization composed of 53,000 Legionnaires and 504 posts in Wisconsin.

Members of the ceremony’s planning committee include Gert Herman, Marine Corps League; Gail Tiedt, Legion Auxiliary; parade committee chair Lois Levenhagen, Legion Auxiliary; Ross O’Brion, Legion Adjutant; Chuck Staab, AMVETS; Commander Ty Letto, VFW; Paul Lauth, VFW; Melody Krakow, Marine Corps League; Commander Del Yaroch, American Legion; Dave Noe, Marine Corps League; Jeff Krakow, Marine Corps League and Master of Ceremonies; Del Winning, Marine Corps League; Bob Koch, American Legion; Dave Kleindl, American Legion; and Sgt.
