Rams’ Faulk Misses Another Practice

October 19, 2001

ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Marshall Faulk missed practice Friday with a bruised right knee for the third straight day and might sit out this week’s game against the New York Jets.

Faulk, the NFL’s MVP last year, was limited to using a treadmill Friday. Coach Mike Martz said he plans to use rookie Trung Canidate on Sunday.

But Martz left the door open just a bit, saying Faulk felt better than ``even he had anticipated,″ and that a final decision will be made Saturday.

``He’ll let me know in the morning,″ Martz said. ``He feels real good right now. His comment to me today was ’You know, I’ve played with this before, these types of injuries.‴

Faulk, who has had two operations on the knee since November, declined to comment.

Martz said Faulk could set his recovery back if he tries to return to the field too quickly.

``You keep playing on that thing, you keep pounding it, you just make it worse and worse,″ Martz said.

The Rams’ upcoming schedule won’t affect whether or not Faulk plays Sunday, the coach said. The Rams play the Saints next week and then have a bye.

``It’s the old coach’s thing _ you take each one a game at a time,″ Martz said. ``The length of the season does play into it. You don’t want to lose him for an extended period of time.″

Quarterback Kurt Warner said he would be surprised to see Faulk carrying the ball against the Jets.

``I don’t think he’s going to play,″ Warner said. ``I don’t expect him to be on the field. I’m sure it’s going to be a little bit different, but we’re just going to play. I can’t worry about who’s back there.″
