Hampton 34, Bethune-Cookman 14
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ Hampton University running back Tyrone Mayer rushed for a career high 202 yards and three fourth-quarter touchdowns to give the Pirates a 34-14 victory Saturday over Bethune-Cookman College.
Hampton, 3-2 in its first year of NCAA Division I-AA competition, put together impressive touchdown drives of 98, 80 and 73 yards on a rainy night before a crowd of 8,823 at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.
The Pirates also scored twice after taking over on downs in Bethune-Cookman territory in the final minutes.
Mayer scored touchdowns on runs of 24, 39, and 9 yards. The sophomore put the Pirates ahead with the 24-yard touchdown run up the middle with 4:34 to play to take a 20-14 lead.
Bethune-Cookman coach Jack ``Cy″ McClairen said Hampton just wore his team down.
``Our defense is the strong part of our ball club, but they can’t stay out on the field the whole game,″ McClairen said. ``They worked overtime and when they broke down, they really broke down.″
Hampton controlled the ball for more than 36 minutes, including 20:49 in the second half.
