South Umpqua handles St. Mary’s in Far West match

MEDFORD — The top-ranked South Umpqua volleyball team began the second half of Far West League play with a straight-set win over St. Mary’s on Tuesday night.

Set scores were 25-17, 25-17, 25-11.

Jenna Whitmore had seven kills, 11 digs and two aces for the Lancers (13-2, 6-0 FWL). Alyssa Rainville added seven kills and four blocks, Shalyn Gray contributed five kills and 13 digs, and Sydnie Johnson chipped in 20 assists, 14 digs and four kills.

“Certainly not our best match,” said S.U. coach Sarah Gray. “I’m hoping we can pick up the intensity.”

South Umpqua will host Brookings Thursday, then travel to No. 2 Cascade Christian Oct. 9.
