Press Institute urges Colombia to crack down on journalist killers

March 26, 1997

GRANADA, Spain (AP) _ The International Press Institute has called on Colombia to end the impunity of those who kill and injure journalists there.

The IPI, a global association of editors and publishers holding its 46th annual meeting here, passed a resolution Tuesday expressing outrage at the murder of four journalists in Colombia during the past six months.

Most recently, Gerardo Bedoya, editorial page editor of El Pais of Cali, Colombia, was killed March 20, two days after writing a column calling for the extradition of drug traffickers and the confiscation of their property.

The resolution also condemned two recent dynamite attacks against Colombian newspaper offices.

The IPI also urged China not to restrict freedom of information in Hong Kong when it takes over the British colony July 1, and it called on Turkey to change ``harsh press laws″ and grant amnesty to 78 imprisoned journalists.
