Hog roast fundraiser Wednesday to benefit student environmental program

September 11, 2018

The public is invited to a hog roast fundraiser starting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday that benefits the “Wetbugs Program,” an environmental program that takes place at Ellis Middle School and the Hormel Nature Center.

The event will be hosted by Austin Chapter 10 of the Izaak Walton League, a non-profit conservation organization, and is the 23rd year of their support.

The menu includes Piggy Blues pulled pork sandwiches and all-you-can-eat sweet corn from Honey Tree Farms, as well as coleslaw and apple crisp from Super Fresh Produce.

The two-day “Wetbugs Program is led by Stillwater aquatic entomologist Dr. Dean Hanson. Teaching seventh grade students about the biology of streams, wildlife and the impact of pollution, he brings mayflies, stoneflies, hellgrammites and other live wet bugs to the classroom as a hands-on identification opportunity before the students take a field trip to a stream.

Hanson will be giving his presentation to an estimated 300 students.
