Kids Get Ill From Mock Space Shuttle
WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) _ A school bus designed to look like the space shuttle malfunctioned Monday, spewing carbon dioxide fumes into the vehicle and sickening more than two dozen fifth-graders.
Science classes use the space shuttle _ a bus painted black and white and nicknamed Apollo Condor _ to study spaceflight.
Wausau Schools Superintendent Charles Skurka said the students became dizzy, nauseated and short of breath. ``There was one young lady that I ran to initially, she was actually vomiting,″ he said.
Wausau Hospital treated 29 students and a bus driver. All were released.
A coupling came loose on a line that feeds carbon dioxide to exhaust cones on the back of the bus. The carbon dioxide shot into the bus.
