SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico’s largest public university has paid the U.S. government $1.7 million as part of a settlement after the institution was accused of misusing grant money.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Thursday that a federal investigation found the University of Puerto Rico did not comply with salary reporting requirements involving funds provided by NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation.

Officials said the university had submitted documents stating it was complying with grant rules.
