CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) _ B.J. Surhoff drove in two runs with a triple Sunday as the Milwaukee Brewers broke up a scoreless tie with seven runs in the seventh inning in defeating the Chicago Cubs 8-1.

Jim Gantner had a two-RBI single. LaVel Freeman started the rally off loser Les Lancaster with an RBI single with the bases loaded and no outs.

Darryl Hamilton and Edgar Diaz added run-scoring singles for the Brewers, 2-1.

The Cubs, 1-2, scored in the ninth on Derrick May’s RBI single.

Rick Sutcliffe started for the Cubs, allowing one hit in three innings.

Milwaukee starter Mike Birkbeck retired all nine batters he faced.
